Breaking: Incidents Emerge in the Strait of Hormuz
On 21 October local time, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued Safety Notices 179 and 180, reporting separate tanker attacks in waters off Iraq and Oman.
Specifically, on 21 October local time, a tanker was attacked and caught fire 11 nautical miles west of Bukha, Oman. The fire was later extinguished. The tanker is now at anchor and all crew members are safe.
On 20 October local time, a tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile 30 nautical miles southeast of Al Faw, Iraq. The master reported that the crew were safe, with no immediate reports of vessel damage or environmental impact.
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) stated that relevant authorities are investigating the incidents. It warned transiting vessels to navigate with caution and report any suspicious activity promptly.
Meanwhile, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) confirmed that on 21 October local time, the AL DASMA, owned by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) — 109,719 DWT, built in 2014 — was attacked and caught fire in waters off Oman; the fire was subsequently extinguished.
In addition, AIS data shows that the product tanker Soyia (47,094 DWT, built in 2004) came under attack in waters off Iraq on 20 October, marking the first such incident in more than a month.
IMO data indicates that as of 21 October, at least 119 verified attacks on merchant vessels have resulted in the deaths of 24 seafarers.
Notably, at least 28 reported and confirmed attacks have taken place in the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent waters so far in October.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has issued multiple recent statements claiming that "violating" tankers struck mines laid by its naval forces while transiting what it describes as "unauthorized routes" south of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran warns that attempts to cross mined areas within the strait constitute an "illegal" act and will result in the destruction of the offenders’ assets.
Furthermore, latest developments show that diplomatic mediation and military preparedness are both accelerating across the Middle East. A compromise proposal jointly put forward by Qatar and Pakistan briefly raised market hopes for de-escalation. However, tough rhetoric from Iranian officials, Israel’s military moving to maximum readiness, and Hegseth’s visit to Israel together paint a tense picture of diplomacy racing against conflict.
Above all, may the world know peace and no more wars!
