A nearly 12,000 TEU container vessel caught fire while en route toward Brazil.

On 16 October local time, Hapag-Lloyd issued a customer advisory confirming that the ESPIRITO SANTO EXPRESS, operated by the carrier, suffered a fire on its voyage from Singapore to Santos, Brazil. Vessel owner Seaspan confirmed all crew members on board are safe, and relevant parties are taking measures to contain the incident.

However, a navigation warning released on the same day revealed a graver development: the vessel has been abandoned and is adrift. To date, fire-related damages, the vessel’s final condition and details of affected cargo remain pending further confirmation.

I. Fire on Nearly 12,000 TEU Container Vessel

According to the customer advisory issued by Hapag-Lloyd on 16 October, the carrier has received incident notification from vessel owner Seaspan and maintains close contact with the shipowner.

The advisory states that the ESPIRITO SANTO EXPRESS was sailing from Singapore to Santos, Brazil when the incident occurred. Seaspan confirmed all crew members on board are safe and their status has been verified. Relevant parties are taking necessary measures to contain the situation.

As of the release of the advisory, the scope of impact is still under assessment, including the extent of damage to the vessel, whether onboard cargo has been affected, and potential changes to the vessel’s subsequent operations.

Hapag-Lloyd noted it will continue to monitor incident developments and update customers once more information is available. Customers with cargo loaded on this vessel are advised to contact the local customer service team for specific cargo arrangements.

II. Navigation Warning States Vessel Abandoned and Adrift

Notably, in addition to Hapag-Lloyd’s customer advisory, maritime safety messages issued between 15 and 16 October disclosed further updates on the incident.

Per NAVAREA V Navigation Warning 0648/26, the ESPIRITO SANTO EXPRESS was abandoned and left adrift after the fire broke out. The last recorded position shown in the warning was 28°07.87′S, 26°56.90′W at 19:06 UTC on 15 October.

Furthermore, relevant maritime distress messages reported the vessel fire, requesting nearby vessels to remain vigilant, render assistance if conditions permit and report observations.

It should be clarified that Hapag-Lloyd’s advisory mainly confirms the fire incident and crew safety, without detailed disclosure on whether the vessel was abandoned. The navigation warning provides another key piece of information regarding the vessel’s condition at that time. Information released from these two sources is not fully identical, and the vessel’s subsequent status cannot be deemed confirmed solely based on this.

To date, further statements from the shipowner or carrier are still awaited to confirm whether the fire has been contained, whether salvage operations are underway, and whether towing, inspection or diversion to a port of refuge will be arranged.

III. Multiple Chinese Ports on Its Calling List; Future Schedules and Cargo Delivery Under Close Attention

Vessel particulars show that the ESPIRITO SANTO EXPRESS has a capacity of approximately 11,923 TEU. Owned by Seaspan and operated by Hapag-Lloyd, the vessel is deployed on the AS2 Asia-East South America loop. Public vessel records indicate it has called at Chinese ports including Shanghai Yangshan, Ningbo, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The incident occurred on the voyage leg from Singapore to Santos, Brazil. The vessel was originally scheduled to continue carrying cargo on the Asia-East South America trade route. This incident may affect subsequent port calls, cargo delivery and relevant voyage arrangements.

For cargo owners and freight forwarders, the following points require priority verification:

  1. Confirm whether your cargo is onboard. For bookings related to this vessel, promptly contact the carrier or booking agent to verify the bill of lading, container numbers, loading information and destination port. Do not judge whether cargo is affected merely based on routing or vessel schedule.

  2. Monitor cargo damage and delivery arrangements. There is insufficient information to confirm the exact number of damaged containers so far, and Hapag-Lloyd has not released a full cargo disposal plan in the above advisories. Cargo owners shall keep tracking carrier notifications, especially for orders with reefer containers, time-sensitive goods and downstream production schedules.

  3. Follow up on voyage adjustments. If the vessel cannot resume navigation, subsequent actions may include towing, port of refuge arrangement, cargo transshipment and voyage revision. However, no specific plans have been confirmed in the advisories to date. Freight forwarders should promptly assess destination delivery time, client lead times and potential extra charges.

IV. Will General Average be declared? No definite information available

After a vessel fire, cargo owners and freight forwarders usually pay close attention to whether General Average (GA) will apply.

General Average does not automatically take effect once a fire occurs. Generally speaking, General Average contribution may only apply where special sacrifices are intentionally and reasonably made or extraordinary expenses incurred for common safety, complying with relevant laws and transport contract terms. The decision to declare General Average shall be judged in combination with incident response, salvage operations and relevant contractual clauses.

Up to now, Hapag-Lloyd’s customer advisory has not declared General Average for this vessel, nor has it issued requirements for related guarantees or cargo release. Therefore, General Average should not be regarded as an established fact at this stage.

If salvage, towing or General Average procedures are triggered later, cargo owners and freight forwarders shall review insurance coverage, transport contracts and official carrier notices in a timely manner, and prepare relevant documents as required.

Moving forward, the most critical items to monitor for this incident remain fire containment results, vessel salvage progress, cargo loss assessment, and any new voyage and cargo handling updates issued by Hapag-Lloyd. Until further confirmation, all information shall be subject to official announcements from the shipowner, carrier and formal maritime safety notices.
